Vietnam has a population of 92 million people, of which over 42% is under the age of 24. The current smoking rate in adult males is 56.1%. COPD prevalence in Vietnam is the highest in the Asia Pacific region at 6.7%. It has very sparse health infrastructure in rural areas so there are long travel times and poor access.
A range of activities including effectiveness and cost-benefit of case-finding, smoking cessation and indoor biomass smoke-reduction strategies in resource limited primary care settings are now being piloted in Vietnam, as part of the IPCRG e-faculty programme. Pictured below is Niels Chavannes, the main researcher, with the Vietnamese team including Prof Le Thi Tuyet Lan and Dr Nguyen Nhu Vinh in Tay Ninh Province. Based on this success pilot study, Vietnam is also one of the countries participating in the FRESH AIR Horizon 2020 project. You can read about these activities in the Vietnam page here FRESH AIR Horizon 2020 in Vietnam.
