Motivational tension

Most smokers want to quit,[10][11] and welcome the opportunity to discuss the support available to help them quit.[13]  A patient-centred approach is to ask the patient about their smoking, acknowledging that they may have tried to stop many times in the past, and discuss the options that exist to support a quit attempt.[50] Smokers will balance their desire to stop smoking versus the need to smoke: a brief offer of help which respects this motivational tension can help a patient move towards a quit attempt.
