A no-smoking practice:
  • Display no smoking posters. Link to the IPCRG 'This is a no-smoking practice' poster
  • Institute a ban on smoking on practice premises. In some countries, smoking rates amongst doctors can be as high as 60%, reflecting the prevalence in the general population.[38]
  • Routinely identify the smoking status of patients, flagging records.
  • Promote self-help materials, leaflets, quitline numbers in the waiting room. (see 3. Quitlines and other sources of support)

Less may be more!

If most GPs set up their practice to flag/note the smoking status of patients, refer to Quitline telephone support service, and hand out QUIT books, the impact of these activities will be greater than the impact of a few GPs offering an intensive intervention. Key to success at all levels will be appropriate training for GPs and their primary healthcare team.[37]
