Using the cycle of change

  1. Ask the patient if they smoke, and if so, have they considered quitting.
  2. Their response to this will help you place the patient in a stage of motivation.
  3. Click on the appropriate stage for information on how you could respond to achieve your aim of moving your patient towards their quit attempt.
Determination:
Determination: Smokers in this stage are ready to make a cessation attempt.
Aim: Provide support for a quit attempt
Response: Be supportive and enthusiastic! Give time to planning the attempt. Fix a quit date. Discuss available medical support, including pharmacotherapy and follow-up. Discuss problems that may be caused by abstinence including withdrawal symptoms. The cessation plan may also include a "plan B" in case of relapse.
