Using the cycle of change

  1. Ask the patient if they smoke, and if so, have they considered quitting.
  2. Their response to this will help you place the patient in a stage of motivation.
  3. Click on the appropriate stage for information on how you could respond to achieve your aim of moving your patient towards their quit attempt.
Action:
Action: The cessation attempt is put into action.
Aim: Follow the plan made with the patient and try to be available in case they feel close to relapse.
Response: Congratulate the patient if they are succeeding. Agree that they should come to see you even though they might have relapsed so that you can help them learn from the mistake and try to come back to "Action" as soon as possible - many smokers can try again immediately.
