IPCRG International Scientific Conference
5 June 2009, Stansted airport, UK

Background information

The IPCRG Board has agreed in principle to test the feasibility of an IPCRG research meeting in the "off years" between its major biennial conferences. Its focus would be on new research rather than a mix of research and education, which is the purpose of the biennial meetings. The activities will include the spectrum of ideas generation, the fine-tuning of research protocols, presentation of early and complete findings, and discussions about dissemination and translation into practice.

The advantages of this are:
  1. It strengthens the association between IPCRG and research in the minds of primary care researchers
  2. It increases the opportunities for the IPCRG's network of innovators and early adopters to meet, share knowledge and experience and therefore to become a stronger network
  3. The IPCRG conference can start to become an expected point in the researcher's calendar, offering opportunities beyond ERS, ATS and EACCI
  4. This test year, in 2009, enables us to test the newly commissioned online abstract submission system prior to its use in Toronto in 2010
The venue for the conference has been changed from Aberdeen to Stansted airport after feedback from the research sub-committee meeting during ERS. The wish was to choose a venue where the ease of travel was central. Stansted airport has connecting flights to all major cities in Europe — most of which are low-priced airlines. In addition there is an express train service to central London.
The meeting rooms at the hotel will cater for both plenary sessions and small group discussions in parallel.

We propose to offer a web-link for those researchers unable to travel at a reduced fee.

The conference dinner is planned for Thursday evening at 8pm — allowing most European delegates to fly in for this after a full day at work.

With a low-cost budget for the conference we hope to meet the needs of both the busy primary care practitioner with an interest in research and the primary care researcher with a wish for publication of papers or discussion of planned research — without a huge cost.
