Research Needs: Smoking Cessation References
Introduction Current Practice Rationale Guidelines Questions Method
Why is there a need for further research?
  • There are many barriers to undertake smoking cessation in primary care. Studies have shown that most smokers see their primary care physician every year without being offered effective assistance in quitting.9
  • Smokers also show low quit rates and frequent relapse.10
  • Identifying these barriers and improving the situation seems to be important.
  • Since smoking cessation activities differ between countries and there is debate as to who should deliver care and to whom, it is useful to gather comparative information on the incentives and practices that optimise smoking cessation in primary care.
