How will research be conducted?

To increase our knowledge of how smoking cessation is carried out and differs between countries we suggest a postal questionnaire to primary care physicians in several countries.

Questions for primary care physicians – delivery of care in smoking cessation:

  1. Do you ask all patients about tobacco use?
  2. Do you document smoking status for patients in their charts?
  3. Do you advise all tobacco users to quit ?
  4. Do you assist all smokers in their quit attempts?
    • If yes, do you offer minimal intervention?
    • Do you offer brief interventions - "5 A's"?
    • Do you offer pharmacologic support?
    • Do you offer more intensive smoking cessation intervention?
  5. Who practises smoking cessation in your clinic?
    • Physician only
