Diagnosis: What is the prevalence of people with intermittent asthma?

Intermittent asthma is predominantly managed in primary care with studies suggesting it may make up over half of childhood asthma. Figures are less clearly defined in adults.10 Intermittent cases are important because they are symptom-free between episodes and this fact may lead to the refusal of the need to apply control measures to this population, thereby increasing the socio-economic burden of asthma, despite the attention given to persistent cases. This would suggest that future research on the magnitude of intermittent asthma cases is needed, along with review of exacerbation risk and placement of these patients in the treatment paradigms to allow further management of their asthma.
