EUROPEAN POSITION PAPER ON RHINOSINUSITIS AND NASAL POLYPS 2007

The European Position Paper on Rhinosinusitis and Nasal Polyps (EP3OS) group, a task force of the European Academy of Allergology and Clinical Immunology (EAACI), has issued updated guidance on the treatment of acute and chronic rhinosinusitis and nasal polyposis. Rhinosinusitis, which can cause severe congestion and a runny nose, is a significant and increasing health problem which results in a large financial burden on society. The new guidelines offer the most comprehensive evidence-based recommendations on the diagnosis and management of rhinosinusitis and nasal polyposis for primary care physicians, specialists on ear, nose and throat (ENT), and non-ENT specialists.

For more information, see http://www.ep3os.org/. In addition, members of IPCRG who are part of the EPOS group have worked with EPOS to produce a primary care summary of the document in the Primary Care Respiratory Journal, see http://dx.doi.org/10.3132/pcrj.2008.00029

The Global Burden of COPD: An International Call to Action
(PDF document)
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a fatal lung disease characterised by progressive and irreversible airflow limitation. Every hour, COPD is estimated to kill over 250 people worldwide and the annual death rate from the disease is greater than that of lung cancer and breast cancer combined. Morbidity and mortality from COPD are considerable, and increasing. By the year 2020, COPD is predicted to become the third leading cause of death worldwide (exceeded only by heart disease and stroke). The Global Burden of COPD Summit (chaired by Professor Leonardo Fabbri MD, Modena, Italy) was convened to raise awareness and increase efforts to address the growing impact COPD is set to have on global health.

EMEA guidance on paediatric pharmacovigilance
(Word document)
IPCRG (International Primary Care Respiratory Group) and EFA (European Federation of Allergy and Airway Diseases Patients' Associations) welcome the recent adoption of the European Medicines Agency's (EMEA) "Guideline on conduct of pharmacovigilance for medicines used by the paediatric population", after having submitted comments to the draft guideline in an open consultation earlier this year.
