Short report on the activities of National Primary Care Respiratory Group (NPCRG) (Bangladesh)

On the occasion of "World Asthma Day 2004" National Primary Care Respiratory Group (NPCRG) Bangladesh worked along with "Asthma Association, Bangladesh" with the following events:
  1. Art competition among children on the topic " Healthy Home; Healthy lungs". About 500 children took part in the competition. 40 Winners were awarded from different age group and Honourable Health minister of People's republic of Bangladesh handed over their prizes.

  2. Attractive posters and festoons with the general information of asthma decorated traffic points and road dividers.

  3. An essay competition was arranged among the medical students all over Bangladesh on the topic of asthma. Best five competitors were awarded by Honourable Minister of Health and Family Planning.

  4. World Asthma Day Rally was held in Dhaka city on 4 May 2004 with the participation of about 500 Doctors under the leadership of Honourable health minister. A souvenir is published with the messages from Honourable health minister of people's republic of Bangladesh, Dr Suniti Acharya (WHO representative in Bangladesh), Richard S. Irwin, MD, FCCP (ACCP President and Chair, Board of Regents), Anders Ostrem (President, International Primary Care Respiratory Group) and other distinguished personalities.

  5. Finally the big one: Two-day workshop on asthma and COPD was arranged in Dhaka. In this workshop group discussion was arranged for updating the "National Asthma Guideline". The discussion was divided into nine groups one was led by Dr GM Monsur Habib of NPCRG. Dr Habib described the experiences of asthma management in the primary care setting and advised to amend the guidelines accordingly. Dr Dipankar Nag from NPCRG presented a paper on the best care of the COPD patients in Bangladesh. He gave importance on the non-pharmacological management in Bangladeshi situation. The best care of COPD should be based on best pulmonary rehabilitation, he commented. Dr Mossaraf Hossain of NPCRG presented the software on asthma "Patient tracking software - asthma version". He described the importance of keeping patient data in the management of asthma. There are other papers from the NPCRG as well. Among them "Asthma in General Practice' of Dr Mir Nurul Islam described the importance of "First aid of asthma" for the better asthma management in the community. Finally Dr Habib described how to do the asthma audit for the best asthma care in the community.

The NPCRG enjoyed the very busy exciting days recently on the occasion of world asthma day 2004 and become very much encouraged and inspired from the activities. Accordingly we are working to promote the care of respiratory diseases in Bangladesh effectively.
