Patients with chronic asthma who had attended the Chief Commissioner's Free Pollen Allergy Camp recently held at the Aabpara Community Centre, were invited to have their spirometry done. As many as 123 patients attended the camp. Of these, 97 patients could not perform the test properly and surprisingly, only 12% had their readings within expected limits. Further reading

IPCRG Cyprus

The primary care society in Cyprus is organising an event for World Asthma Day on the 16th of May for the public providing free spirometry testing for volunteers in the main public square of the town of Nicosia providing them with written material and information. There is also going to be an announcement in the media (newspapers and TV) on the 5th of May. We are using the IPCRG presentations along with other tools as an update for GPs. This is done in collaboration with the pulmonologists at the respiratory department of Nicosia general hospital (the main general hospital of Cyprus).

The National Asthma Council is using the occasion to promote the message to the 2 million plus people with asthma in Australia to make a commitment to keep their asthma under control with an up to date asthma action plan (see
http://www.nationalasthma.org.au/content/view/247/638/) and annual review with their doctor. This accompanies news that 385 Australians died from asthma in 2007.
